EITaaS team stands up new security operations center
A Hanscom IT team stood up an Enterprise IT-as-a-Service Security Operations Center, referred to as an ESOC, in San Antonio in late February to ingest data from Buckley Garrison, Colorado, and Offutt Air Force Base, Nebraska. With updated visualization and automation capabilities, the new ESOC will provide cybersecurity professionals with increased threat detection resources, allowing shorter response times.

Remembering the crew of Cobra Ball flight 664
The crash of Flight 664 on March 15, 1981 was a harsh reminder of the risks members of the Fightin’ Fifty-Fifth take daily. The 55th lost six members of their unit when an RC-135S Cobra Ball crashed upon landing in severe weather at Shemya Air Force Base, Alaska. On the 40th anniversary of the crash, March 15, 2021, the 55th Wing paused to remember and honor the victims of the crash; Maj. William R. Bennett, Capt. Larry A. Mayfield, 1st Lt. Loren O. Ginter, Master Sgt. Steven L. Kish, Staff Sgt. Steven C. Balcer and Staff Sgt. Harry L. Parsons III.

Louie’s new beginning
The 55th Security Forces Squadron Military Working Dog team at Offutt Air Force Base, Nebraska, welcomed their newest addition Feb. 24, 2021. Louie, a two-year old black Labrador retriever became the newest member of Offutt’s MWD Section. This is the first time the Labrador retriever breed has been assigned to the MWD team here. Like many MWD’s before him, Louie received his training at the 341st Training Squadron, Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, Texas. He has been trained for obedience and detection and graduated with his certification in explosives detection.

Fightin’ Fifty-Fifth’s command post earns Air Force award
The 55th Wing Command Post recently earned the 2020 Large Nuclear Command and Control Command Post of the Year award. Selected from approximately 15 command posts across five different commands, this 22 member team resurrected the command post after the 500 year flood, rebuilding twenty programs and team morale.
