After 1,100 man hours of work and more than $175,000, the Kenney Gate or Flag Gate as many call it, has undergone a transformation and is open for business.

The work on the gate was necessary to update security measures and provide better protection from the elements for the 55th Security Forces members.

The most noticeable aspect of the project is the canopy that covers the inbound area where 55th Security Forces members inspect vehicles and identifications of personnel seeking admission to the base.

"There were actually two separate projects taking place at the same time," said Bruce McCauley, 55th Civil Engineer Squadron deputy director.

During the project, it wasn't all about building up.  Some in-operable aspects were also removed.

"The old Visitor Control Center that was no longer operational was demolished," said Jeffrey Bohlken, 55th Civil Engineer Squadron.  "We also repaired the degraded sections of pavement on Nelson Drive, replaced the damaged sidewalk, renovated the roadway islands where the flags are located and more."

The gate also received some much needed security enhancements, but due to security concerns details are being withheld.

The Bellevue Gate by the 557th Weather Wing will be closing for maintenance and security upgrades beginning June 22 and will not re-open until July 27.

Also happening around base are road resurfacing projects that may slow down commuters.  Drivers are asked to use caution and anticipate delays during the upcoming month.
