Offutt to host FEMA hiring event Published Jan. 15, 2016 By 55th Wing Public Affairs OFFUTT AIR FORCE BASE, Neb. -- A hiring event in partnership with the Federal Emergency Management Agency takes place at the Offutt Airman & Family Readiness Center from 9 to 4 p.m. on Feb. 4. The primary focus of the event is for FEMA to recruit and hire for what they call their reservist or CORE positions. "CORE are Contingency On-call Response Employees and they are considered intermittent workers but make-up about 80 percent of our disaster workforce, and may work as few as 30-days per-year but many work the entire year," said Michael Scott, who is the Mitigation Division Director for FEMA Region VII in Kansas City. Reservists have flexible work schedules and they are very much like term or temporary employees working on a full-time basis. They get paid when they are deployed and receive limited benefits. "They normally have a two-year contract which is renewable," Scott said. "I have CORES working for me that have been on board for over 10 years. They have full benefits, and time counts towards retirement. " The hiring event will consist of a short briefing that will discuss how a reservist is activated and deployed, followed by a FEMA 101 introduction, which discusses the agency and is a time for questions and answers. "We plan to bring a full human resources team that will facilitate resume review and interviews," Scott said. "They will also market and recruit for any openings we have within our Washington D.C. headquarters, which are primarily permanent full-time positions as well as and CORE."
