More than 100 motorcycle riders from Team Offutt hit the roads May 10 with the common goal of preventing motorcycle mishaps down the road.

"The idea behind this ride was to provide more of a controlled environment for those who might not have as much experience riding in groups," said Chief Master Sgt. William Thomaston, 55th Wing command chief, who also participated in the ride. "Our goal is to help reduce the overall number of motorcycle safety mishaps in the Air Force by providing riders with valuable hands-on experience."

The 2013 55th Wing Mentorship Ride started at Offutt Air Force Base and ended in Louisville, Neb., spanning 134 miles over mostly highway roads. The riders traveled through the picturesque Loess Hills of western Iowa en route to Beebeetown, Iowa, where they stopped for lunch. From there, they headed back into Nebraska for the final two legs of the ride.

"It's a great way to get riders accustomed to some of the terrain and highways throughout the area," Thomaston said. "Many people who are new to Offutt don't realize just how nice the scenery can be throughout this part of the country."

"From Crescent, Iowa to Missouri Valley was the best leg of the ride," said Tech. Sgt. Jack Tucker Jr. from the 55th Wing Safety Office. "It's where the hills are and the farms - definitely the highlight of the ride."

Prior to leaving, riders received route instructions, safety briefings and inspections of their personal protective equipment. The riders were split into eight groups of 10 to 12. Experienced road captains were assigned to each group with safety being the main theme.

"One of the main things we had to look at was risk management," Tucker said. "When you have 100 riders going on a certain route, you don't want to overlap the groups. You also want to match the novice riders with the experienced riders."

Tucker, who was in charge of risk management, ensured safety was taken into consideration for every aspect of the ride. Emergency medical technicians were on hand if needed, trailers with support equipment were available for mechanical issues, and safety briefings were given at each stop.

Tucker said they received nothing but positive feedback from the participants and they hope to plan another ride later this year.

The 55th Wing Safety Office along with the Offutt Riders Association is sponsoring a "Show and Shine" May 23 10 a.m. - 1 p.m. at Offutt's base fire station. Participants are encouraged to drop their motorcycles off early for the best chance of winning. Voting is open to all ages and the winner will be announced at 2 p.m. Other activities will also be available as part of the safety venue, including a bounce house for kids, safety displays and food items for purchase.
