Mark Heinicke, a contractor with URS Corporation, starts the motor on a portable generator on Offutt Sept. 9. The motor powers a bio-sparging system, part of a relatively new technology used as part of Offutt’s Environmental Restoration Program. Bio-sparging is the injection of a liquid mixture into groundwater plumes. The liquid feeds microorganisms already present and ultimately results in the breakdown of contaminants in the plume.
