Chris Companogne, a contractor with Environmental Priority Services, drills a steel rod into a groundwater plume at Offutt Sept. 9. The rod, used as part of an environmental cleanup effort called bio-sparging, will be used to inject the plume with a liquid which feeds microorganisms already present in the groundwater. The microorganisms ultimately breakdown contaminants in the plume. Since 2005, environmental contractors have injected approximately 4.5 million gallons of biostimulant into groundwater plumes around the base as part of Offutt’s Environmental Restoration Program.
