Keep a healthy smile for Halloween Published Oct. 21, 2013 55th Dental Squadron OFFUTT AIR FORCE BASE, Neb. -- Halloween can be a fun time for children and even adults but it also can pose challenges to keeping a healthy smile. Below are a few tips to help keep you and your family on track this Halloween. · The frequency of eating Halloween candy NOT the amount increases the risk of cavities. Eating candy and other refined carbohydrates changes the pH balance of the mouth, making it more acidic, which can increase the risk of cavities. After eating, it can take 20-30 minutes for the acid environment in the mouth to dissipate. With this fact in mind, it is better to eat candy right after a meal rather than a piece now and another piece in an hour. · Avoid hard, chewy and sticky candy that stays in the mouth for long periods of time. Not all candy is created equal. Candies like lollipops, jolly ranchers and taffy stay in contact with the teeth longer, increasing the risk of cavities. Consider having chocolate instead. · Drink water! Water not only helps rinse food particles from the mouth, tap water also contains fluoride. Fluoride helps protect the teeth from cavities. If you drink bottled water, be sure to check the label for fluoride content. · Chew gum with Xylitol. Chewing gum increases saliva production which helps neutralize acids and wash away food particles. Xylitol reduces the amount of acid-producing bacteria, which in turn can prevent cavities. · Maintain a good home care routine. Brush your teeth at least twice a day and floss nightly. To further reduce the risk of cavities, brush your teeth after eating. · Consider breaking tradition. This Halloween, consider handing out stickers or inexpensive novelty items instead of candy.
