Personnel and Resources
The 2d Weather Squadron is a 151-member squadron maintaining global vigilance at six worldwide sites in support of multiple national security mission sets. The squadron consists of four geographically separated detachments, an overseas contract site, and a 24/7/365 operations center.
Operations
2 WS is responsible to joint and interagency partners for a wide range of mission-tailored products essential to global operations. The unit primarily provides meteorological conditions to the Department of War, Intelligence Community, and Combat Support Agencies. As the DoW's sole 24/7 space weather center, 2 WS provides space environmental forecasts, satellite anomaly assessments, and tailored impacts to the Electromagnetic Spectrum. They maintain around-the-clock vigilance supporting all 11 Combatant Commands with space environmental assessments, real-time responses to classified-level meteorological requests, and operating and maintaining the Solar Electro-Optical Network (SEON) global solar monitoring weapon system through both the four-site Radio Solar Telescope Network (RSTN) and the three-site Solar Optical Observing Network (SOON).
Space Weather Mission
2d Weather Squadron, 557th Weather Wing delivers 24/7 Space Environment analysis and forecasting for the Department of War and Intelligence Community by forecasting the Sun’s activity to provide mission-tailored Electromagnetic Spectrum (EMS) signal health and propagation products supporting joint exercises, global military operations, and senior national defense decision makers.
