UAVs help study Zebra Mussel population in Offutt’s base lake

John-Paul Ore, a graduate student at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and research assistant with the Nebraska Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit, explains the robotics of an Ascending Technologies Firefly hex-rotor unmanned aerial vehicle to Zack Rigg, a natural resources manager from the U.S. Air Force Civil Engineer Center at Offutt Air Force Base, August 12, 2015. Researchers tested the UAV’s capability in collecting water samples from Offutt’s base lake. It is the only known lake in Nebraska to contain Zebra Mussels, an invasive species being studied to improve control and eradication efforts. (U.S. Air Force photo by Delanie Stafford/Released)
