Facebook event remembers those lost to suicide Published Sept. 18, 2013 By Sarah Heynen DCoE Public Affairs ARLINGTON, Va. -- The Defense Centers of Excellence for Psychological Health and Traumatic Brain Injury will host "Week of Remembrance," a virtual event on Facebook, Sept. 23 - 30, to remember service members and veterans who lost the battle to suicide. DCoE encourages survivors who lost someone to suicide to post photos, memories and artwork of their loved ones online. "Week of Remembrance" coincides with Suicide Prevention Month, observed in September by the Defense Department and related organizations. The main goal of DCoE communication efforts this month is to highlight information and resources that encourage people to seek help for psychological health concerns, suicidal ideations, or intervene with those at risk. Prevention and mental health resources can be found on the DCoE website and the Defense Suicide Prevention Office website, the lead Defense agency on suicide prevention, resilience and survivor assistance. Two other resources dedicated to survivor assistance are the Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors, which provides tragedy assistance to anyone who has suffered the loss of a military loved one, regardless of the relationship to the deceased or the circumstance of the death, and Sesame Street's Military Families Near and Far which offers resources to help talk to children about grief and loss. Confidential support for military members is available 24/7 from the Military Crisis Line by phone 800-273-8255 (press 1), text 838255 or online chat.
