Fire Prevention Week 2013

  • Published
Team Offutt will celebrate and educate during the 2013 Fire Prevention Week happening Oct. 6 - 12 with various activities centered around this year's theme, Prevent Kitchen Fires.

Fire Prevention Week was inspired by one of the worst fires in America - the Great Chicago Fire of October 1871. More than 250 lives were lost and 17,430 buildings destroyed. In 1911, on the anniversary of the Chicago fire, the Fire Marshals Association of North America proclaimed the nation's first Fire Prevention Day to promote public awareness of fire safety.

President Calvin Coolidge declared the first Fire Prevention Week in 1925 as an official national observance. The week containing the Oct. 9, the anniversary of the Great Chicago Fire, has been the focus of the annual fire safety campaign sponsored by the National Fire Protection Association.

The message of the 2013 Fire Prevention Week campaign, "Prevent Kitchen Fires" will educate patrons about how roughly 80 percent of U.S. fire deaths occur in home fires, and how home fires and fire deaths can be prevented.

The Offutt Fire Protection Flight, will hold several activities throughout Fire Prevention Week and the month of October to educate the base populace on the importance of fire prevention, developing and practicing home escape plans, use of smoke alarms and eliminating home fire hazards and other fire safety topics.

A fire safety display will be set up at the Offutt Exchange Mall where information on home escape plans in the home. Several static displays will be set up at different locations throughout the base to provide information on fire safety.

Bellevue elementary and preschool children will visit the main fire station to learn about fire safety in the home. The Rising View fire station crew will visit the Child Development and Youth Center.

Fred the Fireman, Sparky the Firedog, Patches and Pumper and Pluggie the Fire Hydrant will make special appearances at the fire station and at several random locations throughout the base.

Come visit us at one of the Offutt fire stations or join the children on their school trip to Fire Station One. Help make your home a safer place to live. For more information about Fire Prevention Week, contact Bill Dudek at 402-294-5522.
