1st WXG holds assumption of command ceremony

OFFUTT AIR FORCE BASE, Neb. --  The 1st Weather Group held an assumption of command ceremony at the Lt. Gen. Thomas S. Moorman headquarters building June 26.

U.S. Air Force Lt. Col. Steven Dickerson accepted the guidon from U.S. Air Force Col. William Carle, Air Force Weather Agency commander, during the tradition filled ceremony inside the Chief Master Sgt. Peter Morris Auditorium.

With the 1st WXG being spread across more than 360 North American locations, the ceremony was broadcast live to those not in attendance via video teleconference.

"I look forward to working with each and every one of you," Dickerson said. "I feel honored and blessed to be your commander."

Dickerson comes to the 1st WXG from the Pentagon where he served as the deputy chief for weather resources and programs. He assumes command from Carle, who took command of AFWA on June 18.

"Eight years ago I had the privilege of serving in the 1st Weather Group for the first time as the director of operations for the 25th Operational Weather Squadron," he said. "And just like today, Air Force weather was going through a significant restructure."

At that time, the newly formed 1st WXG was charged with transforming Air Force weather. Dickerson said he vividly remembers the changes taking place and was in awe of those doing it.

"Since then, the 1st Weather Group has blossomed into what I believe is the finest centralized weather support organization in the world," he said. "And the reason why the 1st Weather Group is the best is because of the intellect, dedication and tenacity of its people."

Carle said he's thrilled to have Dickerson on the AFWA team. His complete skill-set of unique experience as well as his Airmen and mission focus, will help them successfully navigate future challenges.

"Lt. Col. Dickerson is the right Airman to command the 1st Weather Group," he added. "He's a true warrior and leader with extensive operational and combat experience. He understands all aspects of the weather business through his very diverse exercise and depth in his career."

Dickerson will lead more than 800 members who are responsible for producing forecasts for Air Force, Army, Reserve and Guard installations throughout North America. In addition, the 1st WXG also serves as the training hub for 97 percent of all weather accessions, both enlisted and officers.

"He certainly understands the OWS mission and the importance of reach-back operations," Carle said. "His staff tours on [United States Air Forces in Europe] and Air Staff have given him an invaluable strategic perspective. This is will be absolutely critical during these very dynamic times."
