Contest nails 55th Wing in 55 words Published Feb. 17, 2015 55th Wing Public Affairs OFFUTT AIR FORCE BASE, Neb. -- The 55th Wing commander recently challenged the members of the Fightin' Fifty-Fifth to describe the many missions of the wing within 55 words. Submissions were received from across the globe with the winning submission coming from U.S. Air Force Lt. Col. Karl Weinbrecht, 42d Electronic Combat Squadron commander, at Davis-Monthan, Air Force Base, Az. "If our nation's enemies are threatening the United States or our allies, we will find them, fix them, track them and if need be, target them. The Fighting 55th brings to bear all the expertise, innovation and sensor technologies needed to stay one step ahead of our adversaries on land, sea and in the air." Weinbrecht earned a prize for the winning submission. "We had so many good submissions, it was very difficult to select a winner. Lt. Col. Weinbrecht's description, though, put our mission in terms we all understand," said U.S. Air Force Brig. Gen. Gregory Guillot, 55th Wing commander. "While many wings have a single mission that can easily be described, our wing is so varied that I wanted to see how we could best describe what our Airmen are doing on a daily basis." The commander's only guidelines for submissions, aside from the 55 word requirement, were to use plain language as much as possible, avoid excessive use of acronyms or doctrine- type words, and to ensure it would make sense to visiting family and friends. Here are a few other submissions: "No place to run, no place to hide; we'll find you for sure if you're not on our side. We seek, we listen, we translate, we jam; we give our commanders truth, so don't try to scam. We're vigilant, we're patient, we're legend, not myth - you KNOW the Sun Never Sets on the Fightin' 55th!" 55th Dental Squadron "As the most diverse wing in the Air Force, via several unique and highly specialized airframes the 55th Wing combines Air Combat Command's most rapidly deploying assets with an unyielding deployed presence to provide flawless execution of world-wide and dynamic intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance, electronic attack, national-level command and control, treaty verification, and precision awareness missions." 45th Reconnaissance Squadron "As one of the largest and most diverse wings in the Air Force, the 55th continually provides a wide range of airborne reconnaissance, electronic warfare and command and control capabilities around the globe, while constantly enabling the missions of 51 tenant organizations, with an unwavering focus on ensuring the responsiveness of our nation's nuclear forces." 55th Wing Plans and Programs The commander said he appreciated all submissions and may open up the contest once again in the future.
