A federal service employee who's been a fixture in the 55th Communications Squadron for the last three decades is officially retiring June 1.

For 30 years, William "Bill" Campbell worked in the Central Destruction Facility at USSTRATCOM where he was responsible for the destruction of sensitive material. Before that, he served in the Air Force for 21 years and retired as a technical sergeant. Combined, he will have more than 51 years of total federal service.

Campbell's lengthy career began in 1963 when he enlisted in the Air Force to work in administration. He never stayed in one place for too long, having been assigned to ten different locations; from Vietnam to a joint assignment in Hawaii to Offutt Air Force Base where he retired from active duty in 1984. In 1985, he was hired as a federal employee at Offutt and has worked at the base since.

Campbell said he enjoyed all of his assignments, but found his work in Vietnam and Pearl Harbor the most satisfying.

"My assignments in the military were good, my civilian career has been good, so I really can't complain," Campbell said.

Most of his co-workers know him as "Bill" or the guy that makes great barbeque brisket for office potlucks, but all say they'll miss seeing his bright smile coming down the hall the most.

"He always had a smile on his face, regardless of anything - always cheerful, always happy." said Al Springer, a longtime co-worker of Campbell in the 55th CS. "Kind of like Santa Clause...that's what I'll miss."

As for retirement, Campbell said he plans on visiting family and doing a "whole lot of barbequing."
