U.S. Navy Adm. Cecil D. Haney (standing right), U.S. Strategic Command commander, introduces former U.S. Army Air Corps Cpl. Robert D. Holts (front row, third from right), an original Tuskegee Airman, and representatives from the Alfonza W. Davis Chapter of Tuskegee Airmen Inc. during their visit to USSTRATCOM headquarters, Offutt Air Force Base, Neb., May 26, 2015. The delegation shared information about their organization, told stories about Holts' experience in the Army Air Corps and answered questions from the audience. Holts, the last known surviving Tuskegee Airman from Nebraska, was sworn into service at Fort Crook, now Offutt AFB, in 1942 and served as a drafting engineer and logistics specialist until 1946. The term "Tuskegee Airmen" refers to everyone - to include men and women, African Americans and Caucasians - involved in the "Tuskegee Experience," the Army Air Corps program to train African Americans to fly and maintain combat aircraft. Contrary to popular belief, this includes not just pilots, but navigators, bombardiers, maintenance support staff, instructors and all personnel who kept the planes in the air. USSTRATCOM is one of nine DOD unified combatant commands and is charged with strategic deterrence; space operations; cyberspace operations; joint electronic warfare; global strike; missile defense; intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance; combating weapons of mass destruction; and analysis and targeting.
