OFFUTT AIR FORCE BASE, Neb. -- Offutt Air Force Base’s Military and Family Readiness and United Way of the Midlands (UWM) signed a partnership agreement to launch the Military and Family Helpline 211, June 26, 2024.
Nearly 70% of active-duty service members and their families live off base, making it essential to provide robust quality of life support systems that extend beyond military installations and Veteran Affairs offices.
This innovative collaboration uses the infrastructure of UWM's existing 211 contact center to deliver comprehensive, confidential information and referral assistance to military connected individuals including veterans, active/guard/reserve service members, retirees, civilian personnel, and their families.
“Both Military and Family Readiness programs and the 211 Helpline share a common goal: connecting individuals and families to essential resources and support,” said Col. Patrick Kolesiak, 55th Mission Support Group commander. “This partnership enhances our capability to offer military members, veterans and their families seamless access to vital quality of life support.”
Through the new military helpline feature, military-connected users will have access to trained call specialists 24/7/365 for live support, as well as access to resources through web, text, and application, and personal navigation services for more tailored needs. The helpline utilizes a zip-code based, geolocation-based resource to efficiently connect users to nearby resources for needs including food, housing, healthcare, childcare and employment, offering upfront eligibility and application information to streamline processes. It also extends the reach of the existing Military and Family Readiness Center on base – bridging gaps to the community to create a more cohesive support network.
“By leveraging the existing infrastructure of both military and community services, we avoid duplication of efforts and ensure that resources are used efficiently,” said Shawna Forsberg, United Way of the Midlands CEO and President. “The Military and Family Helpline is a prime example of how the Omaha community stands behind our military, providing comprehensive support and fostering a stronger, more resilient network for service members and their families.”
By enhancing collaboration and resource sharing, the Military and Family Helpline sets a new standard for community support. It underscores the commitment of both UWM and Offutt AFB to improving quality of life for military-connected individuals.
“Quality of life is a key factor in attracting and retaining talent, as well as supporting any new missions for Offutt Air Force Base,” said Heath Mello, President and CEO of the Omaha Chamber of Commerce. “By strengthening our support network for military families, we are not only enhancing the well-being of those who serve, but also driving economic development and solidifying Omaha's reputation as a welcoming and supportive community.”
