November 11 is Veterans Day, a celebration and remembrance of all who raised their right hand and took an oath to defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic, with their lives.
What began in 1919 for the first anniversary commemoration of the signing of the armistice to end World War I became a national holiday 34 years later in 1954.
Veterans have served during military conflicts and times of peace. Many have devoted their lives to the military way of life. They have performed their duties, completed missions, and made many sacrifices along the way.
As a thank you to those who are serving and have served this country, the Bellevue community holds an annual parade with participants from throughout the community, including members of the 55th Wing, U.S. Strategic Command and the 557th Weather Wing.
The parade will start at 10 a.m. Nov. 5 and will run along Mission Avenue in Olde Towne Bellevue. It will go north on Franklin Street and end at Washington Park.
Bellevue University and the Bellevue Chamber of Commerce & Community have added a new military expo event to be held in conjunction with the parade.
The expo will run from 12-3 p.m. at the university’s John B. Muller Administrative Services building at 812 Bruin Blvd. in Bellevue. The free event features a variety of veteran-facing organizations and resources and is open to the public.
