Bellevue Public Schools to host Freedom Walk Sept. 11

  • Published
Bellevue Public Schools will hold its third annual Freedom Walk on Thursday, September 11, 2008, at the Bellevue Public Schools/Offutt Air Force Base Lifelong Learning Center. The walk, which starts at 4:30 p.m., is a show of support for the men and women in uniform, who, along with their families, make great sacrifices to protect this Nation.

"Last year more than 1,800 walkers came out to support our troops and to pause for a moment to remember the reason so many families are separated this year," said Bellevue Public Schools Superintendent Dr. John Deegan. The Freedom Walk is part of a national campaign called "America Supports You". It gives communities like ours the opportunity to reach out to military families and protectors. "When the Under Secretary of the Defense asked us if we wanted to join in the campaign, we immediately said yes," explained Dr. Deegan. "We jumped at the chance because we live in a community that values service in our armed forces, understands the sacrifices that families make and genuinely wants to help."

After a short ceremony at the Lied Activity Center, the Bellevue Board of Education, Dr. Deegan as well as leaders of the Bellevue/Offutt Community will lead others on a walk around the Lifelong Learning Center. The Bellevue East and West Marching Bands will play patriotic music and walkers will be given flags to wave as they go. Lining the path will be 50 American Flags - one for each state in our Union - held by Bellevue Air Force JROTC cadets. The Freedom Walk is open to the public, free of charge and is appropriate for families and children. The Bellevue Public Schools will also sponsor a Freedom Run on Saturday, September 13, 8:30 a.m. The run will begin at the Lied Activity Center. For more information contact the Lied Activity Center or call 293-5000 or download the registration form.
