Halloween can be a fun time for children and even adults but it also can pose challenges to keeping a healthy smile.

Here are a few tips from the 55th Dental Squadron and American Dental Association on how to help keep you and your family on track this Halloween:

* Eat Halloween candy and other sweet treats with a meal. Saliva production is increased when we eat which helps neutralize acids and wash away food particles.

* Avoid hard and sticky candy and foods that stay in the mouth for long periods. Not all candy is created equal when it comes to cavities. Candies like lollipops, hard candies and taffy stay in contact with the teeth longer, increasing the risk of cavities.

* Drink water! Water not only helps rinse food particles from the mouth but tap water also contains fluoride. Fluoride helps protect teeth from cavities. If you drink bottled water, be sure to check the label for fluoride content.

* Chew sugarless gum with Xylitol. Studies have shown that chewing gum containing Xylitol may reduce the risk of cavities.

* Maintain a good home care routine. Brush your teeth at least twice a day and floss nightly.

* Consider breaking tradition. It may be too late for this year, but consider handing out stickers or inexpensive novelty items instead of candy for Halloween.
