Team Offutt celebrates service of retirees Published Oct. 6, 2011 By Senior Airman Peter R.O. Danielson 55th Wing Public Affairs OFFUTT AIR FORCE BASE, Neb. -- The Offutt Field House doesn't often have a full parking lot on a Sunday morning. The large, open hangar is typically quiet except for a few early risers who take advantage of the readily-available workout machines. However on Oct. 16, the field house will see a bustle of activity. It will be closed to regular patrons, and instead will be home to the 2011 Retiree Appreciation Day. "Retiree Appreciation Day is designed to show our gratitude for retirees' selfless contributions to the defense of our great nation and to reaffirm our commitment to them," said Brig. Gen. Donald Bacon, 55th Wing commander. More than 25,000 retirees from each branch of the armed forces have been invited to attend this annual event, which is designed to provide information, services and benefits in a single location. Presentations on a variety of subjects that are specifically tailored to retirees and their family members will begin at 9 a.m. General Bacon and Rita Sanders, mayor of Bellevue, Neb., will begin the morning by showing their appreciation for those who have committed their lives to military service. "We're just very proud to have the opportunity to give something back to those who served us for so long," Bacon said. "Our nation and our military owe you a debt for the sacrifices you made to get us here." Speakers from the Department of Veteran Affairs will discuss recent changes to veteran benefits. The Offutt Airman and Family Readiness Center will offer programs built to serve retirees and their families. Services will be provided from more than 25 different agencies. The 55th Force Support Squadron will man booths to provide information on their available services. Notary services for powers of attorney will be available at the legal booth. 55th Medical Group personnel will provide flu shots on a first-come, first-served basis. Busses will provide transportation to off-site services. Replacement identification cards are available at the Bldg. C and the legal office will provide wills and legal counsel. "Offutt is proud to support to thousands of retirees all year round," said John Kundinger, 55th Mission Support Group deputy commander. "We ensure the Retiree Appreciation Day is dedicated to them, but we never stop serving them." Parking and shuttles are available from the Offutt Exchange parking lot. Handicap parking will be available on the east side of the field house.
