Chief Master Sgt. James MaGill was honored at a retirement ceremony Aug. 5 and shared with the crowd the story of his family's military legacy.

MaGill's family was represented by his mom, a WWII veteran, his wife who he says has served his entire career with him and his son, an active duty Air Force captain, who officiated the ceremony.

MaGill's career has spanned career fields and continents. Beginning as a maintenance technician who enlisted because "it was in the family and it would pay the bills," Magill ended his career as the superintendent of the 97th Intelligence Squadron after 30 years of dedicated patriotic service.

"My family has been serving this country's military since the Civil War," said MaGill. "My parents were both in the medical corps in WWII, my uncle served, my brother and brother in law are both Vietnam vets, my son is a six-year vet and I've served for 30 years."

Capt. James MaGill, stationed at McConnell AFB, Kan., is a pilot on a KC-135 aircraft and volunteered for back to back deployments earlier this year to ensure his participation in his father's special day.

"I was deployed for six months straight this year to guarantee my leave for coming here," the captain said. "It's really important for me to be able to be here and be the one to retire my dad. My dad and my grandfather were huge role models for me growing up, and I know my dad wishes my grandfather could be here. So for me, being able to officiate the ceremony kind of brings everything full circle."

At the end of the ceremony, Capt. MaGill told those in attendance that since his dad was the one who brought him into the Air Force, it only seemed appropriate that he should be the one to see his dad through to the end.
