Offutt to start using DBIDS for base access

OFFUTT AIR FORCE BASE, Neb. --  Later this month the 55th Security Forces Squadron will begin using the Defense Biometric Identification System to verify the access authorization of everyone entering Offutt Air Force Base, Neb.

DBIDS is a Homeland Security and Defense Department initiative developed to increase force protection and help manage personnel, property and installation access.

"DBIDS is a DOD mandated physical access control system that is currently installed at approximately 200 sites worldwide," said Greg Derkatch, a Department of the Air Force civilian police officer with the 55th SFS.

Essentially all entry controllers will now use a hand-held scanner to verify the credentials of anyone attempting to access the installation. The scanner pulls information from the bar code on the back of the individual's Defense Department issued identification card.

"Entry is granted based on matching data between the DBIDS scanner, CAC, and a regional database," Derkatch said. "The system will provide gate guard personnel the status of each card scanned during the entry process, and also display a photo of the authorized card holder."

The new system helps ease installation access and increases safety and security for everyone on base.

"This system has been proven at DOD installations across the United States," said Maj. Thomas Segars, 55th SFS commander. "We look forward to implementing it and using it to help ensure we provide a safe and secure community here at Team Offutt."

Additionally, the system has the capability to electronically flag and track personnel with adverse law enforcement status and locate DOD personnel for emergency notification and accountability purposes.

"The ability to use the system to get real-time information is a tremendous plus," Segars added.

Offutt will phase the system in at each gate and all Air Combat Command bases will have the system in use by the end of 2013.
