OFFUTT AIR FORCE BASE, Neb. -- Visitors to Offutt Air Force Base, Nebraska have until Oct. 10, 2017 to comply with the regulations in the REAL ID Act that was passed by Congress in 2005.
The REAL ID Act set up guidelines for the issuance of identifications, such as driver's licenses.
Offutt AFB will continue to accept driver’s licenses and state identification cards from extension states or territories through Oct. 10, 2017. However, base security personnel will not accept driver’s licenses issued by non-compliant states or territories for access identity proofing beyond that deadline.
The act established minimum security standards for license issuance and production and prohibits federal agencies from accepting driver’s licenses and identification cards from states not meeting the minimum standards. The standards set up by the Act are accessing Federal facilities, entering nuclear power plants and boarding federally regulated commercial aircraft.
The Department of Homeland Security announced on Dec. 20, 2013 a phased enforcement plan for the REAL ID Act, as passed by Congress, which implemented the act in a measured, fair and responsible way.
The DHS website currently identifies 25 states and the District of Columbia as REAL ID Act compliant. The remaining 25 states and 5 territories are on a temporary extension through Oct. 10, 2017.
