Service members from the 557th Weather Wing’s 2nd Weather Squadron – as well as other wing units – volunteered to assist in hosting Memorial Day ceremonies May 28, 2018, at the Eastern Nebraska Veterans’ Home in Bellevue, Nebraska.

The effort has become a squadron tradition which brings together multiple generations of veterans to remember those who gave their lives in service.

Members of the veterans’ home marched in side by side with Airmen from the 2nd WS to post the colors at the beginning of the ceremony. Volunteers from the squadron also set up and took down the room in addition to managing the event’s parking.

“We really appreciate the volunteers that come from the base,” said Matt Bauman, ENVH director of nursing. “It really helps us to be able to provide events for the members that we have here.”

Staff Sgt. Justin Stockwell, 2nd WS weather journeyman, who coordinated the volunteer effort, said he found the experience rewarding.

“I've volunteered for this event for the last three years and decided to again this year because I believe it to be something that our veterans really do appreciate,” said Stockwell. “It’s an emotional time and understanding that our veterans never stop being our brothers and sisters in arms is a big part of why I volunteer.”
