Take action when tornado siren sounds

OFFUTT AIR FORCE BASE, Neb. -- The Tornado Siren will ONLY be sounded when Offutt AFB is under a tornado warning. The siren will sound the entire time we are under a tornado warning. If you hear the siren, take the following action:

If indoors - move away from windows, doors, and outside walls. Do not delay to close or open windows, or to shut off utilities. Move to an interior room or hallway on the lowest level of the building, and get in a doorway or under something sturdy. Lie on the floor and cover you head with your arms.

· If outdoors - get out of vehicles immediately. Move to a near by building if possible. It there is no substantial shelter nearby, lie flat in the nearest ditch, ravine or culvert with your hands shielding your head. Be aware of flooding in low lying areas.

· If in dormitories - move to the first floor hallway and take protective cover. Do not sit in front of any doors that open into the hallway, as they may be swung open by the tremendous pressure. Monitor the weather conditions on portable radio or television.

· If in housing with basement - ensure family members are inside and moved to the basement. Take protection in a corner formed by the outside walls or in the laundry room (if you have one). Monitor the weather conditions on any portable radio or television.

· If in housing without basement - ensure family members are inside and located in the hallway, bathroom, or closet. Do not sit in front of a door leading into the hallway as they may be swung into the hallway by the tremendous air pressure. Monitor the weather conditions on portable radio or television.

Once the tornado warning expires, the siren will stop and an "all clear" announcement will be made. Remain in shelter until the siren stops and the "all clear" announcement is made.

Additionally, Giant Voice announcements will be made for the following warnings:
- lightning warning (lightning observed within 5 miles of Offutt AFB)
- hail warning
- tornado watch
